Princess Isabella: A Witch's Curse is a fresh face in the realm of hidden object games, introducing concepts which you seldom see in similar games, and which are more likely to be seen in more expensive games with much bigger budgets.
In this game, you play the part of Princess Isabella in a medieval/renaissance kingdom. Isabella was about to be married to her charming prince, when tragedy suddenly struck her kingdom. While she was out in the countryside, a mysterious witch arrived at the castle and managed to imprison the rest of the royal family and their attendants, and cursed the castle. The prisoners are now trapped in shattered mirrors, and every room in the castle is now cursed.
It is your job as Isabella to figure out how to free your people and remove the witch's curse from the castle. In your quest, you are joined by a friendly faerie who will guide you along your journey as well as help you with magic. As you progress through the adventure, the people that you rescue will also help you in your quest to free the castle and defeat the witch!
The first thing that jumps to mind with this game is how fleshed out it is. The production values of the game is really good, with all dialog in the game accompanied by full voice acting! Though after a while, you might feel the urge to shut your faerie friend up by taping up her mouth...
The game also has a healthy dash of adventure in it, with elements commonly found in role-playing games. As you progress through the story, you learn new skills. Your faerie friend also learns new elemental abilities along the way that will help you combat the witch and her ghostly minions. The scenes/rooms in the game are also connected like in a role-playing game. You move from the courtyard through the grand hall through a corridor into the piano lounge, choosing your own path through the rooms with the aid of a map of the castle.
So what is the gameplay like? As was mentioned above, your quest is to rescue your people and remove the witch's curse from each of the castle's rooms. Your family and friends were imprisoned in mirrors which were then shattered. You will need to find all the shards of each mirror to rescue each person, who will then help you on your quest.
The de-cursing of the castle's rooms is also a unique and interesting part of this game. Every room in the castle comes in 2 flavors, "cursed" and "free". At the start, each room is cursed and looks dull, dark and evil. You will need to investigate what is causing this room to be cursed and solve the puzzles in order to remove it.
Each room also has puzzles you need to work through in order to advance in the story. From finding planets to fit into the map in the astronomy room, to searching for piano keys in order to play a haunting melody. The game is not a typical straightforward hidden object game where you move linearly from scene to scene. All the rooms in the castle contain puzzles and objects that interact with each other, creating a huge story where you explore the various floors of the castle.
As has been said before, the Princess Isabella: A Witch's Curse PC game is very well done for a hidden object game. Its immersive feel and intricate story-telling and puzzles take you on a medieval adventure that you are bound to enjoy. Get the Mac version here.
